Track by track review of “Sky Ferreira – As If!”

I recently had to review Sky Ferreira’s EP “As If!” so I thought I’ post my track by track review!

Sex Rules – 8/10
What a fun little song! It’s very ‘cute’, and I’d even say it comes across as being quite innocent, although you’d probably find that hard to believe with the title being “Sex Rules”. It’s very face value in that it’s not trying to be anything it’s not, just a fun song wanting to express that “love sex and God are great”. I could see many calling this song corny or cheesy, and it probably is, but that’s the type of music I like, so I personally enjoyed it! It’s very well produced as well, the production definitely being an integral part of giving the song its playful cheery feel. So if you’re into super duper fun songs, check it out!

Traces – 10/10
Very interesting composition. Again, I have to say this is as equally well produced as “Sex Rules”, but the songs couldn’t be more different in terms of their tones, “Traces” showing a more emotional and delicate side to Sky, all the while having an obscure eerie feel to it. There’s so many interesting quirky little sounds all meshed together in this piece of music that in the end forms something wonderful. Traditional instruments, a piano and a violin are also used, and they feel perfectly welcome as part of the song, drawing that extra bit of emotional response out of you in a way all those synthy sounds can never do quite as effectively. The actual vocals themselves blend in fantastically well with the production, the repetition of certain words form a catchy hook but the song’s mysterious tone is always kept. The song itself is about Sky regretting a relationship with a former lover who didn’t treat her right, doing things such as leaving stains on her bed sheets and telling her many white lies, so she decides to get get get rid of him by removing all traces of him. Best song on the EP in my opinion, and I have no qualms with claiming it to be the 10/10 it is.

Haters Anonymous – 2/10
Ironically my least favourite song on the EP considering Bloodshy & Avant are responsible for this one. The production is definitely better in the chorus than the rest of the song (although that’s not saying much), in that there’s more going on and it actually feels like some actual effort went into that bit, however the melody of the chorus is very week and not really memorable, she sounds very uninspired and ‘phoned in’ when singing it too. The verses are quite shit to be frank; they’re very reminiscent of the terrible “Loca People”, it just feels like she’s plodding along in them making up whatever comes into her head and also the production in them is very very basic. So yeah, this has to be the worst song on the EP without a doubt.

99 Tears – 7/10
Back to her fun side! This song is a wonderful juxtaposition of her joyfully sweet personality, which is so very present in this song, to the actual lyrical content which is an unforgiving heartless ode to an apparent liar and cheater that’s been messing her about. She names them as a ‘cry baby’ who can go drown in 99 tears for all she cares. She’s very much in control of her feelings towards this person and you can tell she really doesn’t give a fuck! All the while being able to keep the tone of the song a fun one, with help from a sugary sweet production.

108 – 8/10
Well this song is a bit ridiculous, I’m almost sure that’s part of the point to it though. Basically she’s got a secret lover, and guess what? He’s 108! Melodically it’s the most versatile song on the album in terms of what mood you’re in and what you want for your listening pleasure. It’s catchy enough to bop along to, and it also works as something to chill out to as well. As with most of the songs on this EP there are those ever present quirky little sounds here and there added to this song which then in turn adds to the song’s personality. I’m very glad I can say Bloodshy & Avant redeemed themselves with this interesting little piece of randomness.

Overall I can say I’ve definitely enjoyed listening to this EP! This girl definitely deserves a lot more success than she presently has.
